There is a national epidemic currently plaguing more than 80% of Americans: healthcare illiteracy. Research finds that just 14% of U.S. adults can correctly define common – and critical – insurance terms, including: deductible, coinsurance, and out-of-pocket maximum. More than half of high-deductible health plan enrollees are unfamiliar with how a health savings account (HSA) works.
As employees are asked to take a greater (if not sole) financial responsibility for how they purchase healthcare services, this lack of health literacy cannot continue. Because if it does, we all suffer – employers, employees, and families – in health and financial stability.
